Soul music became popular for dancing and listening in the United States, where record labels such as Motown, Atlantic and Stax were influential during the Civil Rights Movement. It combines elements of African-American gospel music, rhythm and blues and jazz. Having the ability to sight sing means that you can pick up a sheet of music, read the notes, and sing the lyrics according to those notes. I must admit I thought sight singing was just getting a piece of music and singing the words you saw, that was until I began studying classical music during my undergrad and realized that it was so much more. If your a singer know what it means to be able to sight sing.
Understand music notation: key signature, time signatures, beats, bars, staff, ledger lines, etc. Some of the main elements are: rhythm, melody, harmony, structure, timbre, dynamics, and texture. Become familiar with each element of music. Most importantly of all understand the mechanics of music. If your a musician research the history of your instrument: where it comes from, who made it, what was it's actual use, etc. If your a singer understand how your particular genre started out, who are the major players, what is the meaning behind your genre. In order to actually understand anything let alone music you must know the history of the genre of instrument. How does it look when a choir director asks the organist for a Ab and he has to hit each key in order to find Ab or a music director says take it to the bridge and the singer is lost?
I think it is very important for musicians and artist alike to understand their instrument.
